Feasibility Study

So you want to introduce a new computer facility to your organisation.  The first stage should be to examine the problem and consider how best to resolve it.

In carrying out a feasibility study, both users, business analysts and IT analysts all need to have a clear understanding of the business' processes and the precise nature of the information processing issues to be addressed by the new application.

The study should cover:

Why do you need a new application?
Define the problem you want to solve
What is the new application meant to do?
Look round for possible approaches to solving the problem
For each potential approach, consider:

the technical solution

conformity to the existing IT infrastructure

the financial and staff resources that might be needed
Decide which approach should adopted

Draw up a formal BUSINESS CASE (including costs, benefits, payback period and internal rate of return)
